From Mace's Hole to Beulah

The town was settled in 1862 as Mace's Hole, named for Juan Maes, a bandit who used the valley as a hideout. A local preacher objected to the name, and in October 1876 the post office was renamed Beulah, a biblical name from Isaiah.

Bishop Castle, a one-man stone castle built by Jim Bishop, stands in the mountains nearby and draws visitors from across the state.
