Plumber in Colorado City

Colorado City at a glance

Colorado City is a census-designated place in the Greenhorn Valley of Pueblo County with 2,237 people at the 2020 census. The Colorado City Metropolitan District provides local services.

What that means for your plumbing

The community covers about 9,645 acres, so homes are spread out on larger lots, many with long service lines and outdoor water. Because the district provides water and sewer, it's worth knowing where your property's responsibility begins before a repair. Leaks in buried lines can run for a long time before anyone notices; see outdoor lines.

Greenhorn's long history

The first settlement here was called Greenhorn, after an eighteenth-century Comanche chief known as Cuerno Verde. In 1845 mountain man John Brown, his wife Luisa Sandoval and their children set up a trading post where the trail to Taos crossed Greenhorn Creek. Many homes here are surrounded by open land and pine-covered hills, with long gravel driveways and outbuildings that have their own taps and hydrants.

Creek water and irrigation

Early settlers dug ditches to carry water from Greenhorn Creek to their crops, and water has shaped the valley ever since. Today's homes deal with the same mountain weather, with colder winters than Pueblo and heavier snow at times. Pipes in crawl spaces and exterior walls, sprinkler backflow devices and swamp cooler lines all need attention before the first hard freeze. Drain what you can in the fall, and if a line has split, see emergency plumbing.
