What to Do If You Smell Gas in Your Pueblo Home
Natural gas has a smell added, often described as rotten eggs or sulfur, so you can notice a leak. If you smell it, act right away.
Request a plumberLeave first
Get everyone, including pets, out of the house. Leave doors open on your way out if it's easy to do so.
Don't make sparks
Don't switch lights or appliances on or off, use a phone inside, light anything, or start a car in an attached garage. Any spark can ignite gas.
Phone from outside
Once you're well away from the house, phone the gas utility's emergency line or 911. They will send someone to check and shut off the gas if needed.
After it's safe
The utility handles the meter and the line up to it. Leaks in the piping or appliance connections on your side of the meter are repaired by a licensed plumber, who pressure-tests the line before the gas is turned back on.
Carbon monoxide
Carbon monoxide has no smell. Headaches, dizziness or nausea that ease when you leave the house, or a CO alarm sounding, mean get outside and have your gas appliances checked.
Prevention
Have gas appliances serviced, keep vents clear, and fit CO alarms near sleeping areas. See gas line plumbing.
Know your valves
Find the shut-off at the gas meter and the small valve behind each gas appliance. A quarter turn so the handle crosses the pipe closes it. Only the gas utility should turn the gas back on at the meter after it's been shut off.
Faint smells
A brief smell when a burner lights is normal. A smell that lingers near an appliance, a hissing sound, or dead patches of grass over a buried gas line are not, and should be checked.
